Choosing the right dog trainer to guide you & your puppy/ dog

Updated: Apr 18

Dog training is an unregulated industry, so let's get it straight:

  • would you get someone who isn't an experienced mechanic to fix your car?

  • would you take your child to a childcare with unqualified staff members?

  • would you go to a Physiotherapist that isn't properly qualified?

So when talking about Puppy School - puppy training - dog training you'll need to check for professional qualifications such as:

    • - a Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services from the Delta Society Australia

      - Certificate IV Dog Training & Behaviour (TAFE colleges like the Kangan Institute)

      - Diploma of Dog Training or Dog Behaviour Consultancy

      - professional membership of force free dog training associations such as the:

    • Pet Professional Guild Australia www.ppgaustralia.net.au

    • Delta Institute www.deltainstitute.edu.au

    • APDT www.apdt.org.au

    • These associations have members who abide by a strict Code of Ethics and its members will not use punishment methods when training your puppy or dog.

    • Translating: it means the dog trainer won't use equipment like: choke chains, prong collars, won't recommend electric devices for your dog like E-collars, shock devices, yell or use 'corrections' to train your dog. These tools may be used by the 'balanced dog trainers' out there.

    • The world of Dog Training & Animal Science has evolved a great deal and these methods described above aren't good for learning, they create a negative association with the dog & its owner, creates fear and negative emotions that aren't induced to 'learning'. The dog may shut down and even become more reactive to things then before, while if you contract the services of a dog trainer who uses positive reinforcement dog training methods it'll help build a strong bond in between you - the pet guardian and your dog based in guidance, respect, trust and love, that's what you want when training a dog. To aim forming everlasting relationships in between you & your pet.

    • To be part of these associations you have to prove you have proper qualifications, Public Liability & Professional Indemnity, that you do constant professional development by attending Conferences, webinars, workshops in your field and keep up with the latest development in Animal Behaviour & Science

    • Have Pet First Aid & Senior First Aid

    • Many of its members help volunteering in community events to help educate their local communities such as Pet Expos, Conferences and local dog events

So next time you look for a dog trainer - puppy trainer - dog behaviourist you know where to look and what takes to become 1

    • Social Media - some of the local community pages can take you all over the place. Do your own research and know where to look very carefully as you want the very best for your beloved pooch/ dog

    • The risk of getting 'anyone' to train your dog can be too big and you only have 1 shoot at getting right

    • We from Pet Pals Dog Training are here to help you anytime you may need
